Omilero - "Water is the cure"

Home Page

Omilero

Omilero translated from Yoruba roughly means "water is the cure". In that spirit a group of passionate individuals have coalesced around a shared commitment to support an indigenous, sustainable, and economically viable source of clean water in the communities of Ogbomoso and Iwo, Nigeria.

Mission

Create economic development through sustainable access to local clean water in Ogbomoso and Iwo, Nigeria

Problem

  • Approximately every 14 seconds, someone dies from a desease brought on by unclean drinking water
  • 4,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable illnesses such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera and dysentery. Nigeria contributes at least 10 every day.
  • In Nigeria, the National Population Commission's 2008 Demographic and Health Survey shows that 85 per cent of the rural population is not treating their water in any way prior to drinking, even though only 43.6 per cent of the rural population has access to safe water (75.4 per cent have access in urban areas).
  • The recently launched 2010 WHO-UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) Report says 42 per cent of the population in Nigeria has no access to improved drinking water, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of all those without access in Africa as a whole.
